D1100 GSE to Brazil 2009

David's blog

Imagine

Imagine not being able to read or write.
Imagine having a wage that can hardly feed your family.
Imagine working a long, hard day emptying dustbins.
Imagine people caring so much that they are doing something to help.
It is happening in Campos. Rotarians are making a difference in peoples' lives.
Thanks to the care and concern of Rotarians like Maira and Miriam (R.C. Campos dos Goytacazes Planicie)some municipal workers from the city are being taught basic literacy and life skills. The employer provides a meal plus text books but it is Rotarians who are making it happen.

A Long and Winding Road Led Me to......

  • The lovely city and people of Nova Frigburgo (Huge thanks to Gilvan, Neide and family for their hospitality and to Naiana for letting me share her birthday and acting as interpreter).
  • Seeing the work of Negra - a well know Brazilian who sculptures in clay which is later covered in grass.
  • Planting a tree in the Naval Hospital.
  • Meeting Julio again and being introduced to his lovely family - and the painted goats!
  • Appearing as supporting cast to Raph on Zoom TV - bread and butter pudding is introduced to Brazil!

Milk Tea and Cats.

Today we visited the University of Niteroi (UFF) seeing the language school as well as LATEC and the computer science school. Afterwards we went to the University Hospital and were taken around the human milk bank which is supported by local Rotary Clubs. As part of this visit we also saw the neo-natal unit.
Tea was taken with the staff at Cultura Inglesa (an English language school) where we had a warm welcome. The banana cake was delicious!

English GSE Team brings rain!!

Would you believe it? The same time as we arrive in Niteroi it started to rain.
Our reception once again has been first class and I am being accommodated by Sandra and her husband Kleber. Katie and Ruth are also in the appartment.

David's diary

A giant day for the Team leader as he hurtles into technology after being goaded by Jason!
Brazilian Rotarians from District 4750 are doing us proud. The organisation has been very good and we appear to have our own dedicated mini-bus driver.
We are now in Araruama and last night after a pizza supper we were taken to the main town square which the local population are very proud of.
The team are doing a first class job and Distict 1100 can have every confidence in their ambassadors.
Must rush now - we are off to see the mayor.
